Incredible Years Teacher Training Programs

Teachers find themselves spending increasing amounts of time attending to students' aggressive, hyperactive and noncompliant behaviors in the classroom. If these behaviors are ignored, or if teachers give them negative attention, they will continue to increase leading to eventual school failure and antisocial behavior.

The Incredible Years has two programs for teachers: The Teacher Classroom Management Program and the Dina Dinosaur Classroom Curriculum. The manuals and videos for these programs were revised in March 2006. A description of both programs and supplemental materials for each program is below.

Teacher Classroom Management Program

The teacher training intervention is focused on strengthening teacher classroom management strategies, promoting children's prosocial behavior and school readiness (reading skills), and reducing classroom aggression and noncooperation with peers and teachers. Additionally the intervention focuses on ways teachers can effectively collaborate with parents to support their school involvement and promote consistency from home to school. The program can be useful for teachers, teacher aides, psychologists, school counselors, and any school personnel working with young children. The program comprises the following components:

Teacher Program 1 - The Importance of Teacher Attention, Encouragement, Praise
Teacher Program 2 - Motivating Children Through Incentives
Teacher Program 3 - Preventing Behavior Problems—the Proactive Teacher
Teacher Program 4 - Decreasing Students' Inappropriate Behaviors
Teacher Program 5 - Building Positive Relationships With Students, Problem Solving

Emotional Regulation In Preschool: Teaching Children To Cope With Conflict

Videotape or DVD showing a “real live” preschool classroom with teachers implementing Effective Classroom Management Skills from the Incredible Years Dinosaur Curriculum. This curriculum is designed to promote children’s emotional literacy, problem-solving and anger management skills during conflict situations that occur during unstructured play interactions. These tapes show examples of teachers using effective classroom management strategies for reducing aggressive and oppositional behavior and strengthening young children’s social competence.

These tapes show real teachers:

  • teaching children to use a feeling check-in chart,

  • teaching and helping children practice how to be friendly,

  • teaching children learn how to calm down and use self-regulation strategies,

  • teaching Ignore and Natural Consequences effectively,

  • teaching children the use of feeling language to manage emotions, and

  • teachers encouraging parent involvement.

Along with the DVD teachers will receive a leader’s manual, which includes questions to think about in regard to the teachers’ classroom management skills as well as Dr. Webster-Stratton’s interpretation of the teaching strategies being used by teachers with the children.

This program may be used either for teachers using the Dinosaur in the Classroom program, or therapists using the small group therapy version Dinosaur child program. (No video preview available for this item)

Dina Dinosaur Classroom Curriculum (Prevention)

For ages 4-8 years - The Dina Dinosaur Classroom-based Curriculum, with over 120 lesson plans, improves peer relationships and reduces aggression at home and school. It can be delivered in the classroom two to three times a week in 15-20 minute circle time discussions followed by small group practice activities. Children’s home detective club activities manuals encourage parents’ involvement in teaching their children school rules, social skills and problem-solving.
