Greetings Incredible Years Group Leaders, We are pleased to tell you that all our programs are now available on DVD!

In addition we are very excited that our newly updated parenting programs are now available in both PAL and NTSC versions. Thank you to our NTSC users in North America for your patience.

Regards, Carolyn

Revised DVD Programs

All our revised DVD programs are still considered “evidence-based programs.” They include all the originally recommended vignettes on the session checklists used in the prior randomized control studies. However, our prior research studies and the evaluations from parents and teachers have suggested topics and behavior issues that they would like to see more video examples of how to handle. (shown is the Preschool BASIC)

New Vignettes for Parent Programs

Preschool parent program
(ages 3 – 6) the following new video vignettes have been added: (for more details see table 3 objectives on the web site for entire program).

Program objectives

• how to separate or leave children at day care or preschool

• how to encourage self-bathing and successful mealtime behaviors

• how to grocery shop with children

• how to promote children’s social and emotional skills and enhance
friendship skills and understand the developmental stages of play

• how to assist children’s persistence with difficult or frustrating activities

• how to set up predictable and consistent daily home routines

• how to teach children ways to calm down

• how to teach children ways to problem solve

School age program
(ages 6 – 12) new vignettes have added to include more examples of children between ages 8 and 12 and to include topics such as are shown on the Program objectives page of the web site.

Program objectives

• how to help children with homework and set up predictable learning routines

• how to monitor children’s whereabouts and after school activities

• how to advocate for children’s needs with teachers at school

• how set up household rules regarding use of computers and TV

• how to talk to children about drugs

• how to promote children’s responsibility at home

Group Leaders who are using the School Age program for parents of children ages 9 – 12 are encouraged to participate in a one-day training after the three-day Basic training, to cover these new issues.

Enhanced Cultural Examples

In addition to the new parenting examples, the new vignettes include more varieties of families representing a variety of cultural backgrounds including Spanish and Asian families who are speaking to their children in their own language as well as English.

For ways to promote cultural diversity when delivering these programs to diverse populations, please see the article below.

Affirming Diversity: Multi-Cultural Collaboration to Deliver the Incredible Years Parent Programs

Length of Program

Because of the added topics and vignettes in addition to the original vignettes, the program protocols have been expanded resulting in it taking 18-20 sessions for the preschool program and 14 sessions for the school age program.

Costs and Upgrades

The new price of the preschool program is $1595 and school age is $1300. If you have purchased the previous version of Basic program in 2007 or 2008, you may obtain the updated version for $400. This upgrade offer does expire, though, on December 31st, 2008.

Contact Lisa St George, lisastgeorge@incredibleyears.com, for more information regarding the upgrade, your eligibility, or other purchasing questions.

New Babies and Toddler Programs for Parents

We have also released a new baby program (0-12 months), which is 8-10 sessions and a new toddler program (1-3 years), which is 13-14 sessions.

Group leaders who have been trained in the certified 3-day Basic leader training for the preschool program, and have delivered this program, are eligible for a one-day training in the babies program. The babies and toddler programs use the same leadership skills, practices and collaborative processes as the older age programs. Therefore the training for babies program focuses on new vignettes rather than group process skills which were covered in the basic training.

Sample Session DVDs

We now have the sample sessions on DVD for actual parent groups, Dina child groups (treatment) , and Dina in the classroom lessons. These come with a manual describing group processes utilized by the group leaders and trainers. These DVDs are highly recommended as self-study material for learning more about delivery of these programs, both with treatment and prevention populations. See video clips of some of these samples on our website:

Let us know your questions concerning the new programs, we’d be happy to reply!

Best wishes, Carolyn
