NEW RESEARCH

New Parent and Child Incredible Years Programs Research for Children with ADHD

We have just completed a randomized control trial evaluating the 20-week combined parent and child program interventions among 99 children diagnosed with ADHD (ages 4-6). Independent observations indicated significant changes in reducing child deviant behaviors. Mothers and fathers reported treatment effects for children's externalizing, hyperactivity, inattentive and oppositional behaviors, and emotion regulation and social competence. There were also significant treatment effects for children's emotion vocabulary and problem-solving ability. At school teachers reported treatment effects for child externalizing behaviors and peer observations indicated improvements in treated children's social competence compared with control children. Long-term follow-ups are being conducted now to determine sustainability of results. See this article on the website

New Parent and Teacher Research Regarding Outcomes for Children with Depressive Symptoms

In collaboration with Keith Herman we recently published a paper regarding the effects of the IY parent program on co-occurring depressive symptoms. Recently another paper published by Herman compares the outcome regarding internalizing problems for children treated via parent training (PT) versus parent plus teacher training (PT+TT), versus parent, child and teacher training (PT+CT+TT) with a waiting list control. All intervention conditions resulted in a significant reduction of internalizing symptoms compared with the control condition. Further comparisons suggested that the multiple component interventions bolstered the effects of the internalizing outcomes compared with the single component intervention. New Research Regarding Parent Group Leader Training

Early results regarding the training of group leaders in the parent program indicate that group leaders who received ongoing telephone consultations and DVD group reviews from certified Incredible Years mentors had significantly higher program fidelity compared with group leaders who only received only the 3-day workshop. Stay tuned in 2011 for our papers regarding this topic.

NEW BOOKS, MANUALS & MORE

Parent Books for Babies and Toddlers in 2011!

We are putting the finishing touches on a new book for parents, called Incredible Babies - A Guide and Journal of Your Baby's First Year. We are very excited to provide this book as a companion to our Incredible Years Parents and Babies program! It has all the topics covered from the program, and also has pages that parents can write on to help remember these exciting first weeks and months of their baby's life.

Soon afterwards we will also have the companion book for the Parents and Toddlers' program - Incredible Toddlers - A Guide and Journal of Your Toddler's Discoveries. It follows the same format as the Baby book, covering all the topics of the Toddler program and providing parents space to write their memories, paste in photos, and journal. We think you will find these to be very positive additions to your parent groups!

Self-Administered Manuals and Home Visiting/Coaching Manual for Basic School Age Program

For the School Age BASIC parent series we have developed a home-visitor coaching model. This one-on-one parent-coach model can be used to deliver at home the entire School Age BASIC program or as a supplement for parents attending an Incredible Years group. This home-visitor coaching model is a good option if parents cannot attend a parent group due to schedule conflicts, or if there is an extended delay before the next parent group will be offered. This model may also be used with parents who need some additional coaching at home with their children.

*These manuals are already available for the Preschool/Early Childhood Basic program.

Interested in training in one of the other Incredible Years programs? Staff turnover and you need another facilitator trained? If you are in the USA, we are always taking names so we can plan trainings to meet demand. Contact us by email to add names to our list: incredibleyears@incredibleyears.com

Consultation Days

In addition to the authorized workshops, the Incredible Year's certified trainers are available for on-going consulting. New group leaders can submit DVDs for review and feedback from the Incredible Years certified trainers as part of their certification process. Frequently agencies find it helpful to schedule a 1-day follow-up consultancy workshop a year after the initial training workshop. During this workshop, group leaders bring DVDs to show to the group and to receive feedback from Incredible Years certified trainers and other group members.

Incredible Years certified trainers also consult on other matters related to maintaining the quality of program dissemination such as:

  • program evaluations and assessment methods

  • research grant submissions

  • agency adoption strategies

  • on-going professional development of leaders/therapists in the implementation of "empirically validated" interventions

  • ways to build your agency’s supportive infrastructure and long term sustainability by training certified coaches

  • promoting group leader certification to assure program fidelity

If you are interested in a consultation, please contact Lisa St. George, or lisastgeorge@comcast.net, Incredible Years Administrative Director.
